Personal Description: | I give precise instructions to my students so they understand the outcomes of the problems provided. I have students demonstrate what I have taught them as we go through each problem and concept respectively. I let the students solve individual problems independently offering guidance as needed. Thus I get to unlock the potential in each student in order to learn the study material successfully. I am passionate about sharing my background as a leading classroom math teacher, trainer, mentor for over five years. Having graduated in the fields of Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics successfully, I have been teaching since February 2009 at all school levels to college level Math involving Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus and Standardized Math Test programs such as ACT/SAT/PSAT-Math, AP-Calculus etc; at two learning centers(and later as an Independent Educator) in Chicago area to a very diverse group of students. Tutoring Experience: | I feel very privileged to be the first educator in my ancestry. I am also certified by Illinois State Board of Education. Having earned a degree in subject teaching area is the requirement for highly qualified educator, which I strongly possess. Here are reviews of my teaching experience: "My son gained 12 points on ACT-Math, thanks to Mr. Patel's teaching. He was very helpful. We highly recommend Mr. Patel for Math. Thanks Mr. Patel." -Mrs. Leslie T. (Mother of Kevin T.) Subject(s): ACT-Math School: Saint Viator High School, Arlington Heights, IL --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Before I started sessions with Mr. Patel, I did not expect much of myself. My ACT-Math score was at 20, and I was struggling to find a way to truly improve. When we started, we began to work rigorously on areas of Math that I struggled with. Rather than conforming to one base curriculum, Mr. Patel personalized my lessons to focus on areas that I specifically struggled with. For example, I constantly struggled with Plane Geometry and Trigonometry. Thanks to his teaching, I correctly answered every Geometry and Trig question on the April ACT. After two months of sessions, I took the December ACT and received a 27, improving 7 points from my original score. We continued rigorous lessons until February when we began to take practice tests. The diversity of tests that Mr. Patel offered were extremely helpful in showing me everything the live ACT would throw at me. In the end, Mr. Patel's teaching gave me the skills and confidence I needed to take the test. I received a 33 on the Math section, a whole 13 points up from my original score and a 30 on the whole test. Because of Mr. Patel, I went from being below the National Average to being in the 98th Percentile in the entire United States. My time with Mr. Patel proved that hard work really does pay off, and determination goes a very long way. I can't thank him enough for my success." -Mrs. Annette G. (Mother of Sean H.) Subject(s): ACT-Math School: Barrington High School, Barrington, IL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "It gives me great pleasure to mention that Mr. Patel tutored my son, struggling with Math and had relatively low scores and after two months of intesive instruction he improved his ACT-Math score to 31. We were very delighted with the result and recommend Mr. Patel as a teacher. He was always considerate, punctual and had good rapport with my son." - Dr. Fatima M. ( Mother of Ayub M.) Subject(s): ACT-Math School: Glenbrook North High School, Northbrook, IL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Very satisfied with Alpha Math Learning. Mr. Patel is a phenomenal Math Instructor. He has this natural talent of teaching Math to any student at any skill level. Personally, I was never a good student at Math, but after hiring Mr. Patel that began to change drastically. Before I hired Mr. Patel, I was really struggling on the ACT(I consistently scored below a 20) and Geometry(I was earning a "C"). But within a course of 2 months and a lot of hard work, I raised my grade up from 73% to a 90% in Geometry. He starts out with a diagnostic test to determine where you stand as a student . After the diagnostic test, he came up with a custom tailored program focusing primarily on the areas that I was struggling with, but he also didn't leave out other key topics regardless of how good I was at them. This method really helped me gain a firm grasp on ACT-Math. I feel a lot more confident and knowledgeable in, not only ACT-Math, but also in my school Math. I took my final ACT and gained 12 point jump. I am very satisfied with Mr. Patel's performance. He really knows how to teach every student to do Math. I recommend Mr. Patel to any student or adult looking to increase their Math skill level or just looking to earn a better grade." - Dr. M. Hussain( Father of Nasir H.) Subject(s): ACT-Math, Geometry, College Algebra, Trigonometry School: Barrington High School, Barrington, IL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Mr. Patel was an excellent teacher! He was very clear and explained the topics I needed help in. I learned what I did in a semester in a few classes with him and I understood so much better. He's a really good teacher. I also gained 11 points in 3 months of tutoring in ACT-Math." -Mrs. Lilliana L.(Mother of Nicole L.) Subject(s): Algebra-I, Geometry, Algebra-II, ACT-Math. School: New Trier High School, Winnetka, IL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "We selected Mr. Patel after talking to multiple instructors. We liked what he proposed and chose him over others. Also Akila gained 330 points on SAT-Math and with that higher score she got accepted at Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA). I am very satisfied with Mr. Patel's teaching." -Mrs. Kris V.(Mother of Akila V.) Subject(s): SAT-Math School: Scullen Middle School, Naperville, IL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Mr. Patel, one if the amazing teachers I had for Geometry and now for Adv. Trigonometry/Pre Calculus is very influential. And also, I wanted to thank you for partaking and helping me in my High School success because I got accepted to both Northwestern and Harvard University Summer Scholar Program." -Arsalan K. Subject(s): Geometry, Advanced Trigonometry/Pre Calculus School: Conant High School, Hoffman Estates, IL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "If it hadn't been for Mr. Patel, I never would've been able to do so well in my honors Math class. Mr. Patel's commitment to my education and positive personality led to excellent grades and superb achievement in Math. I would recommend Mr. Patel with great enthusiasm with any student who wishes to excel in Math. He is incredibly helpful, knowledgeable and committed to excellence." - Mrs. Shazia A.(Mother of Abhiya A.) Subject(s): Honors Trigonometry/Pre Calculus School: Palatine High School, Palatine, IL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I recommend Mr. Patel not only as a tutor but a mentor; he really made High School easier for me especially since it was my freshmen year and starting in a big school. I have come a long from my first session with him; each session may not be the same but after each session I truly feel like I learned something. Overall, Mr. Patel is a phenomenal teacher, tutor and mentor I'd recommend him to anyone because he wants you to succeed and will go a great distance if you are willing to let him. He also inspired me to intern for my Algebra-II teacher Junior Year, because I was so well established in the area I was confident I could teach it." - Mr. Shakil A.(Father of Hamza) Subject(s): Geometry, Algebra-II, Adv. Trigonometry/Pre Calculus School: Palatine High School, Palatine, IL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Mr. Patel has helped me greatly with Math. I had a grade of 27% in Geometry, and after three weeks of tutoring from him my grade improved to a 65%. Without Mr. Patel's help I would have Not passed the class." - A. Gilbert Subject(s): Geometry School: New Trier High School, Winnetka, IL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I just want to thank Mr. Patel for everything he did to help me pass the class. He said "Math requires lots of practice and patient". I had an exam in a week from the day of the meeting. I failed my previous tests but the one I took after, I received 84%. If I ever take a Math course again in the future I sure will be going to him for more tutoring. He really loves helping out troubled students and he knows his material. He is always prepared to teach you. Thank you Mr. Patel." - Palak P. Subject(s): College Calculus School: Harper College -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "At first, I was worried about getting a tutor, I thought it would be a waste of time and I would not be interested in wanting to learn; little did I know, I had a wonderful tutor who made me think otherwise. I am thanking Mr. Patel because now that I am happily at DePaul University, the tutoring that I have received has helped me so much in my Business classes, I comprehend with what I am learning better than I used to and it helps me out in an everyday basis. From my sales at work to my learning at school, I am much more confident in my Math capabilities. For all my improvements made I have that to thank Mr. Patel and as I go about my future through school and my future career I hope I have the patience, charisma and Math aptitude to help other people so they will be able to succeed in Math or any other subject. Thank you Mr. Patel." - S. M. Taha Jafri Subject(s): Math Placement Exam @ Elgin Community College, Elgin, IL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Thanks for working with John and thanks for all your help. Subject(s): ACT-Math School: Barrington High School, Barrington, IL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "During his tenure, we have observed Mr. Patel to be very diligent in his duties. He is very responsible resource and doesn't expect instructions to carry out his regular duties. Mr. Patel takes proactive measures in helping/teaching the kids and having the center well organized. Mr. Patel is an extrovert; his outgoing nature and positive attitude helps bring in good business in retaining and increasing the customer base. Many a time, in the absence of other co-workers of the center, Mr. Patel has assumed their roles in addition to his and helps maintain the decorum of the office. Mr. Patel teaches kids of all age groups starting from 3rd grade thru college level Math involving Calculus and Geometry." -Director @ Kumon Learning Centers, Chicago Area, IL and father of Sachin V. Subject(s): H-Pre Calculus, AP Calculus and ACT-Math School: Stevenson High School, Lincolnshire, IL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Mr. Patel provided instruction to a very diverse group of students. He did an excellent job of making all math easier for students to understand." -Executive Director @ Huntington Learning Center, Chicago Area, IL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Urmil Patel is an extremely personable, intelligent and industrious young man with high ambition. His commitment to academics has not kept him from doing all he can to become well-rounded. He displays the many characteristics that are intrinsic to being a successful employee and colleague as well as a leader of his community. He has consistently displayed balance in his life by being involved in extracurricular activities and community service, and he welcomed the opportunity to mentor and tutor students at University of Illinois. He was consistently in the top of his class for the core requirements in his major and recognized by his faculty. He is an outstanding role model for his peers and will continue to make his mark in years to come. In my opinion, he is deserving of an opportunity to continue giving of himself and would be an excellent addition to any team. Urmil's leadership qualities and commitment to education community service make him a most worthy candidate." -Mr. Florencio Diaz Director of Advising and Outreach Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science University of Illinois (Chicago) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Mr. Patel was a student in Abstract Algebra course for Secondary Education majors and for regular Math majors. I got to know Urmil through his written work, his participation in class discussion and frequent discussion during office hours. Course topics were from areas of Modern Algebra bearing on topics of Secondary Math, but from a more advanced viewpoint. The students worked hard on problems involving a wide range of ideas. I frequently returned homework problems for additional work. Mr. Patel took an active part in the class and was one of six students to successfully complete all fifty problems. I believe he has talent and dedication meriting scholarship support and I recommend him for a Scholarship Association Award." -Mr. John Wood Professor of Mathematics University of Illinois (Chicago) |

I spend a lot of time both getting to know the student personally and discovering where they are having problems with the material. I love finding unique solutions for each student that fit into their life and make studying easier for them. I tend to let the students direct where they want to go and what material they want to go over- tutoring is a much looser structure, so we can really get into those pieces that confuse the student. Because of this style, I find I work best with students who are somewhat independent, though that is by no means the only type of student I can and do work with.

We also work on study skills, how to make different ways of studying work for the student on their terms. I try to get my students to understand that they can work in a very smart fashion, get the material, and still be able to do what they would like.
